Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Dromskehy

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts and earthen ringforts in Dromskehy show that people shaped these landscapes long before modern maps. The circular earthworks, shallow ditches and cultivation ridges suggest a place used for living, farming or marking ownership. They may have belonged to a family, a seasonal camp or a small community now lost from memory. The land still holds the shape of that life, even when the names have faded.
In pasture, on gentle S-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular raised area (diam. c. 30m) on 1937 OS 6-inch map. Circular area (diam. 32m) defined by low rise (int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.4m) with shallow external fosse (D 0.1m). Remains of cultivation ridges cross enclosure on N-S axis. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
