What is recorded here
Fairy fort in Doohatty, County Monaghan: a circular wooded ring, roughly 39 metres across, with a domed centre, an earthen bank, a shallow fosse and a reduced outer scarp on a small rise near the bottom of an east-facing slope. People may have lived, kept animals or marked territory there before the woods closed over the edges. The fairies, in local story, took the rest.
Located on a small rise close to the bottom of an E-facing slope. This is a circular wooded area (diam. 39.5m N-S; 38.5m E-W) with a domed centre defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.7m; int. H 0.55m; ext. H 1.25m) separated by a fosse (Wth of top 4.5m; Wth of base 2.4m; ext. D 0.85m) from an outer bank (Wth 1.7m; ext. H 0.3m) at NW, but the outer bank may be recent. The perimeter is reduced to a scarp (at S: H 1.8m) elsewhere, and an original entrance is not identified.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
