Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Curraghbower

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fort field still marks the place where a thirty-yard rampart stood before ploughs erased it. The 1842 survey captured a semicircular bank across the east-facing slope, but repeated tillage reduced that border to memory. O'Sullivan's land may have swallowed the fort gradually, one seedbed at a time, until only the name resisted forgetting.
In tillage, on E-facing slope. Depicted as semicircular arc formed by hachured bank NW->SE on 1842 OS 6-inch map, enclosing SW corner of field. Levelled; no visible surface trace; field locally known as 'fort field'. Recorded by Bowman (1934, 582) as levelled, single-ramparted fort (diam. c. 30yd) on E. O'Sullivan's land. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
