Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Corporation Lands

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Corporation Lands: a vanished fort where a deep drain cut through the land and men levelled the rest. What remains is a low circular mound, fifteen metres across and one metre high, perhaps natural as Davies thought, perhaps the last breath of a fort forgotten by men but remembered by fairy roads.
Marked 'Fort' on OS 1836 ed. and 'Site of' on 1876 ed. The site is divided into two unequal portions by a very deep modern drain running ENE-WSW. The much larger SSE portion has been levelled and there are no surface remains. To NNW is a low circular mound (dims. 15m ENE-WSW; 7m N-S ; H c. 1m) which Davies (ITA Survey 1942) believed to be a natural feature. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
