Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cornaglare OR Palmira

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Palmira and Cornaglare both claim the same broken ring, a forty-six metre earthen circle where human borders blur. The bank still stands though the entrance has vanished, suggesting the fort refused easy entry even before it fell silent. Some call it a fairy fort because the shape resists ordinary explanation, but a ring is a ring whether built for people or memories.
Raised circular area (int. dims. 46.3m NE-SW; 43m NW-SE) enclosed by a substantial, although partly denuded, earthen bank and traces of a fosse identifiable from S-SW-W. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
