What is recorded here

Coolkeragh holds a circular earthen fort thirty-four metres across, its eastern gap still visible beneath a later fieldbank that curves around the whole site. The main bank rises one metre thirty externally and measures five metres wide at its base, while a shallow outer ditch marks the boundary of the inner chamber. That much is written in the survey description; what is missing is the shape of the lives that entered through the eastern gap, tended the ground inside and watched the sky from the rim.

Internal diameter 34m This univallate rath has been completely enclosed by a fieldbank that curves with the site, thus giving it a bivallate look. The circular area is enclosed by a well-defined earthen bank and exterior fosse. The maximum external height of the enclosing bank measures 1.3m and internally .7m. On average the width of the bank at the base measures 5m. The entrance may have been to the E where a 3m wide gap provides access to the interior. The above description is derived from C.
