Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cooleeny

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Cooleeny hides a thirty-nine-metre earthen ring on a gentle slope, buried beneath reclaimed pasture and forgotten by most boots. A substantial bank of earth and stone once encircled a raised living space, though the entrance has vanished into soil and time. The fairies likely kept the fort when humans stopped seeing it, turning a forgotten home into a mysterious local marker.
On a gentle NNE-facing slope in reclaimed pasture. A report in 1975 (SMR file) recorded a raised circular area (diam. c. 39m) enclosed by a substantial bank of earth and stone with a wide, shallow, external fosse. The original entrance was not recognisable. Not visible at ground level. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 30 November 2011
