Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cloonydiveen is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Cloonydiveen, County Sligo, Ireland. The roughly circular site sits on a north-facing pasture slope, measuring 27.1 metres north-south and 31 metres east-west. A one-metre scarp marks the northern edge while rising ground defines the southern arc. The interior slopes gently from southwest to northeast and contains a man-made underground passage on the northern edge.
In pasture, on the N-facing slope of a rise. Remains of a roughly circular area (27.1m N-S; 31m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 1m) along the N arc and rising ground (H 0.9m) along the S arc. The N portion of the interior is raised and the S portion is cut into the upslope to compensate for the hillslope. Nevertheless the interior still slopes gently from SW to NE, is concave in profile, possibly due to the remains of levelled earthen banks. The rath was levelled in 1985 and a low rise with faint traces of an earthen bank E-W and a scarp W-E were noted during a subsequent inspection in 1985 (SMR (1989) file) as well as a Man-made underground passage (SL037-003002-) on the N edge.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005).
