Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cloonoughter

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Cloonoughter holds a faded ring where a bank and ditch once enclosed a small life. Ploughs have worn the edge until only yellow soil and memory remain. The fort is not gone, but it has become so thin it needs imagination to hold.
In level tillage. In ploughed field a ring of lightly coloured (yellow/brown) stony soil with band of darker soil along its outside edge can be made out enclosing circular area (28m N-S; 30m E-W). This pattern suggests remains of a ploughed-out circular enclosure in which the enclosing element consisted of a bank with an external fosse. From N->E, along line of lighter soil, a slight rise is evident (H c. 0.15m). Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
