Bawn in Killacolla (barker)

No standing remains are now extant of the bawn of Glin Castle (LI017-022002-) and archaeological excavation by Celie O'Rahilly in 1991 failed to find any trace of it (O'Rahilly 1991). The bawn is illustrated in a drawing of the 1600 siege of the castle (Donovan and Edwards 1997, cover). This shows the tower standing at the SW corner of a rectangular enclosure whose entrance gateway is mid-way along its N wall. There is a large hall along the inside of the W wall and two corner towers at NE and SE angles. The bawn wall itself is crenelated. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of Upload: 3 August 2012

The bawn in Killacolla was part of Glin Castle, which was built by the Blake family in the 17th century. It is remembered as an example of early modern Irish castle architecture and the associated bawn, though now lost, would have provided defensive space and status for the estate.
