Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cloneen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts hide inside ordinary fields, waiting for people busy enough to stop seeing them. In Cloneen, that field became The Lawn in front of Cloneen House, a neat green space where an older ringfort may still sleep beneath the grass. The Lawn can be seen as a fortress turned garden, its border forgotten but its shape remembered in the way the land holds itself.
According to Power (1918, 198), levelled ringfort once stood in this field 'now called "The Lawn" in front of Cloneen House'. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
