What is recorded here

Fairy forts are misread human architecture, often raths built by ordinary people. In Castletowncooley, two banks and a wide fosse formed a circular enclosure with a southeast gap and causeway. People lived there, not fairies. The site was levelled in late 1965 after recording, removing the last visible proof that the area once contained a defended human dwelling rather than a mythical one.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Levelled in late 1965 prior to detailed recording of site.
