What is recorded here
Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrowmore (athlone North By.) is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Carrowmore (athlone North By.), County Roscommon, Ireland. Aerial photographs show a slightly domed area sixty metres across, bounded by an earthen bank and outer fosse with entrances at north, east and south. The interior once held field banks from a later field system, but late-1960s reclamation removed the visible shape from the pasture. Another rath lies seventy metres to the northeast.
Marked as a large oval area (dims c. 75m NW-SE; c. 60m NE-SW) only on the 1915 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a shoulder of a S-facing slope. It is visible on aerial photographs (CUCAP: APH 40-42) as a large slightly domed area (diam. c. 60m) defined by an earthen bank and outer fosse with entrances at N, E and S. The interior was overlain by some field banks of field system (RO047-040003-). It was reclaimed in the late 1960s and is no longer visible at ground level in pasture. Rath (RO047-040001-) is c. 70m to the NE.
