Killeglan Castle

This was probably a Keogh castle. Shane McKeogh was a tenant of the earl of Clanrickard at Killeglan in 1617 (Moore, 1978, 60). A castle at Killeglin is marked downstream from the watermill (RO050-033----) on the Strafford map of c. 1636 (Simington 1949, Athlone (146)). Situated at the E end of a low WNW-ESE ridge in a low-lying landscape c. 80m W of the NE-SW Killeglan River above the point where the stream turns W. Two fragments of wall (T 0.6m; max. H 4m) are on the N and E sides of a rectangular structure (dims at least 8.5m NNE-SSW; at least 3m WNW-ESE) with the embrasure of a window on the E wall. The castle is just outside the S end of the W wall of a bawn (RO050-008002-), which is a grass-covered area (dims c. 30m WNW-ESE; 24m NNE-SSW) defined by sections of masonry wall at the N (L 6m; H 0.3m) and W sides while the E and S sides formed by steep natural scarps. Killeglan Castle was likely held by Shane McKeogh, a tenant of the Earl of Clanrickard, in 1617. It is remembered as part of the local medieval landscape associated with Gaelic landholding in the region.
