Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrigacrump

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Half-hidden in the west, the ringfort holds its breath. The earthen bank stands 1.6m high, encircling a circular space that slopes gently south. In the southeast quadrant, a shadowed passage may cut through the earth, waiting for someone brave enough to listen. The fairies never left; they simply stopped answering human questions.
In pasture, atop E-W ridge, in corner of field cut off by stone wall. Circular area (26.7m N-S) enclosed by earthen bank (H 1.6m), with shallow external fosse. Interior slopes down to S; heavily overgrown in W half; possible Man-made underground passage (CO088-089---) in SE quadrant. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
