Rostellan is a flat, forgotten margin where a castle vanished into a grand house and the house vanished into nothing. The 4th Earl of Inchiquin likely rebuilt the Fitzgerald stronghold before 1750, turning military pride into domestic comfort. When the house was demolished in 1944, even that memory lost its shape. Now the east shore of Cork Harbour keeps only the absence, a level line of grass where human ambition kept changing its mind about what it wanted to be.

The castle at Rostellan was originally built by the Fitzgerald family, later held by the Earls of Inchiquin, with significant rebuilding as a large house undertaken by the 4th Earl of Inchiquin before 1750. It is remembered as part of the broader Fitzgerald estate network in Munster and for its association with the influential Inchiquin branch of the family.
