Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cabra

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Two earthen banks and a deep central ditch still circle a raised grass field in Cabra, County Cavan. The entrance has vanished, but the shape remains: a hand-built room large enough for firelight, tools and argument. People may have lived there, fled there or simply marked the edge of someone else's claim. The fairy name does not dismiss that human possibility; it widens it.
Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 35m) enclosed by two earthen banks with intermediate wide, deep fosse. Possible traces of an external fosse at W. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
