Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Bunnadober

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Bunnadober is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Bunnadober, County Sligo, Ireland. The oval earthwork sits on an east-facing pasture slope, with a two-metre bank enclosing a space forty-one metres long and twenty-three metres wide. A six-metre entrance opens in the north arc, while the eastern interior rises to balance the ground tilt. Dense growth covers the east and south edges, and a possible underground passage appears in the southwest quadrant.
In pasture, on an E-facing slope. An oval area (int. diam. 41m N-S; 23m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 2m; int. H 1.25m; ext. H 0.8m), best preserved at N. There is an entrance (Wth 6.1m) in the N arc. The E portion of the interior is raised to compensate for the slope. There is a possible Man-made underground passage (SL040-18802-) in the SW quadrant. The perimeter along the E and S arcs is densely overgrown. The rath was recorded in 1836 as 'Lios Bán' (OSL, 156). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005).
