Curlew Pass is a narrow mountain chokepoint near Boyle where Hugh Roe O'Donnell ambushed Sir Conyers Clifford's English column on 15 August 1599. The Irish alliance struck before the larger force could deploy, routing it and killing five hundred men while sustaining barely a scratch. The pass itself did the killing: steep walls, hidden depth and a narrow throat that turned numbers into meat.

The Battle of Curlew Pass was fought on 15 August 1599 during the campaign of the Earl of Essex in the Nine Years' War, between an English force under Sir Conyers Clifford and a rebel Irish force led by Hugh Roe O'Donnell.
