What is recorded here

On the N-facing slope of a hillock, to which it was moved during the building of the Boyle by-pass road in 1995. D-shaped sandstone block (dims 1.1m x 1m; T 0.45-0.8m) with a poorly-executed 'IHS' inscribed on its upper surface. Its original location is not known. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
Linked to the tradition of clandestine Catholic worship during the Penal Times, the mass-rock was used as a site for saying Mass in secret. Such stones often became local holy sites, associated with prayers for protection and deliverance from persecution.
