Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Brittasroad, Gortataggart is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Brittasroad, Gortataggart, County Tipperary, Ireland. It occupies a circular area 33 metres across on ground sloping gradually to the southeast. A low earth and stone bank, 2.3 metres wide and 0.35 to 1 metre high, encloses the site without a visible external ditch. Later field boundaries near the north, east and west edges create the illusion of a missing ditch, while a possible two-metre entrance gap remains obscured by vegetation at the south.
Situated on ground sloping very gradually to the SE in pasture. A raised circular area (diam. 33m N-S and E-W) enclosed by a low, earth and stone bank (Wth 2.3m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.73-1m) with no visible evidence of an external fosse, though the impression of a fosse is created by the close proximity of later field boundaries at N, E and W. There is a possible entrance gap (Wth c. 2m) at S, though it is obscured by vegetation. The bank has been slightly quarried into at SW. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 September 2008
