What is recorded here
Fairy fort in Barrafohona: a circular earthen enclosure about 25 metres across, marked on the 1842 Ordnance Survey map and now levelled without visible trace. It stands in pasture on a north-northwest slope, facing the Nagle, Galtee and Knockmealdown Mountains, with a rectangular enclosure about 140 metres to the northwest. People may have lived, herded or hidden there before the land was changed; the mountains still keep the shape of the place in view.
In pasture, on NNW-facing slope. Good view of Nagle, Galtee and Knockmealdown Mountains. Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m). Levelled; no visible surface trace. Rectangular enclosure (CO054-048---) c. 140m to NW.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
