Marianne and Denis watched the surveyor drop a pin into the grass beside the earthen ring. The machine recorded width, depth and the shallow hollow at the centre, but it did not ask why the field road still bent around the fort like water around a stone. Marianne touched the cool edge of the scarped bank and imagined someone living there in rain, heat and ordinary fear. The fort had no gate they could name, yet its shape still kept the land honest.

In rough pasture, on N-facing hillside. Roughly circular area (diam. c. 25m) defined by scarped edge (H 1.7m; Wth 14m), with external fosse (D 0.45m; Wth 4m) NW->E, and counterscarp bank (ext. H 1.1m) NW->SE. Scarp is best preserved NW->NE, but elsewhere is gradual and somewhat indistinct in profile. Counterscarp has dumped material covering it at N. Interior gently dips down to shallow hollow just E-of-centre; SE quadrant covered by thicket of brambles and nettles as is enclosing element in this area. Terrain immediately E of enclosure is marshy. Avenue leading to farmyard curves to avoid enclosure on W side. Field boundary, shown abutting enclosure at NE on 1924 OS 6-inch map, has been removed.
