Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballyready

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy forts at all. They are human ringforts, misnamed because people stopped believing the truth and began inventing stories instead. The flat circle, the broken bank and the exposed ground all point to a lived place that was abandoned, forgotten and then disguised. What is missing is not mystery. It is memory.
In pasture, on NW-facing slope. Levelled; circular area (c. 20.7m N-S; c. 21.3m E-W) defined by low bank (int. H 0.7m; ext. H 0.25m). Interior slopes to NW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
