Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballyoneen (barrymore By., Gortroe Par.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are earthen rings people once believed the fairies danced inside. In Ballyoneen, County Cork, a circular area about twenty-two metres across stood in pasture until ploughs and boots levelled it into ordinary soil. The 1842 Ordnance Survey map still marks the ghost of that ring, preserving a shape no longer visible to the eye.
In pasture. Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as circular area (diam. c. 22m). Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
