Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballynamona (kells Upper By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Forget every fantasy about hidden doors or fairy kingdoms. The evidence points to a human dwelling, probably ordinary, probably forgotten. A round enclosure thirty to thirty-five metres across, a shallow ditch, a gap at the south, and nothing more. People lived there, left it behind, and the land smoothed the edges until even the memory became thin. What remains is not mystery but measure: a small circle in flat country, large enough for life and quiet enough to disappear.
Located in a low-lying and fairly level landscape. This feature is not depicted on any map. The cropmark of a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30-35m) defined by a single fosse feature with an entrance gap at S is visible on an oblique aerial photograph (CUCAP: AYS, 37), but it has not become visible on other aerial images. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 22 February 2019
