Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballynaglogh East

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are human origins and can be identified by their circular banks and ditches. This is one: a broken ring of earth and stone on an east-facing slope above a tributary of the Glashanabrackriver. People may have lived there, herded there, or simply marked the land before the name changed. The circle still tilts toward the water like a sentence waiting to be finished.
In pasture, on E-facing slope, overlooking tributary of Glashanabrackriver. Roughly circular area (32m N-S; 27m E-W) defined by bank (H 1.2m) in poor condition, incorporated into field fence ENE->SSE; incline towards bank probably indicates fosse S->SW. Possible entrance (Wth 2.5m) to N; numerous cattle gaps elsewhere. Interior slopes to E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
