Church (in Ruins)

In graveyard (CO053-00201-), just NW of centre; fragmentary remains of rectangular church (c. 20m E-W; c. 7m N-S). Part of W gable stands c. 4m high, heavily ivy-clad; N and E walls traceable as sod-covered foundations, apart from fragment at NE corner (ext. H 1.25m); graves have destroyed S wall. Ledge (H 1.75m) on W wall; above this Power (1917, 6) describes a 'small, oblong ope, which splays inwardly'; now obscured by ivy. Parish church of Ardnageehy; in 1700 (Brady 1863, vol. 1, 6) described as 'built of stone and clay; the walls are almost all down, except the west end'; in 1797 site of church ordered to be changed to Glenville (C0043-01702-), present church then 'many years in ruins' (Brady ibid., 7). Power (ibid.) noted 'small, nearly square holy-water stoup, or font'; unable to locate. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
