Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballynacarrig

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No entry, no exit, only a shallow ditch and a low bank circling empty grass. The shape suggests a chamber built for thinking rather than living, yet human hands moved enough earth to draw that perfect line. Perhaps someone stood inside at dusk, waiting for the boundary between worlds to thin. The fort still holds its silence, unchanged by the field cutting through its southern edge.
Roughly circular area (51m N-S; 47m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (Wth 1.3m; H 1.3m) and external fosse (Wth 2.25m; D 0.5m). No entrance feature was identified. Field boundary intercepts external fosse from E to S. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
