Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballylusky

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Five raths cluster along a north-south line in Ballylusky, yet the second from the south has surrendered its shape to tillage and level ground. Bateman marked it as a Danish Fort in 1716, but no earthworks remain for boots to touch. The soil may hide a ring of stones or packed dirt, waiting beneath ploughed fields for someone patient enough to listen.
In tillage, on level ground. The second most southerly of five close-set possible raths (CO045-130001-; CO045-130002-; CO045-130003-; CO045-130005-) aligned roughly N-S. Marked with the symbol for 'Danish Fort' on Bateman map 50, 1716-17 but not visible at ground level. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
