Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballygarrane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballygarrane is a hidden circular enclosure on an east-facing slope in County Cork, Ireland. The bank and external fosse no longer break the grass but still shadow the soil beneath pasture. That absence does not diminish the fort; it suggests the land kept the shape when human tools stopped seeing it.
In pasture, on E-facing slope; no visible trace of site. Circular enclosure visible as cropmark of bank and external fosse in aerial photograph (GSIAP, R523). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
