Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballycullane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Ballycullane held a fifty-five-metre earthen ring on a northwest slope before ploughs erased its visible edge. It still contains a man-made underground passage, while another ringfort and possible passage wait two hundred forty metres northeast. The fort is gone from the surface but not from the land, suggesting human hands shaped the area twice and disappeared beneath it.
On NW-facing slope. Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as circular enclosure (diam. c. 55m). Levelled; no visible surface trace. Man-made underground passage (CO046-01602-) in interior. Ringfort (CO046-01701-) and possible Man-made underground passage (CO046-01702-) c. 240m to NE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
