Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballyan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not abodes but exclusion zones, and the vanished Ballyan ring marks one such boundary. Its missing earth may have been taken for ordinary farm use, while the resident human family never entered the place at all. The absent circle is not a mapping failure but a living warning that the field still contains an occupied chamber.
Within farmyard, on low-lying gently undulating terrain. Monument, depicted on 1923 OS 6-inch map as embanked circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m), is no longer evident in farmyard which has been modernised and extended in recent years. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
