No fairy fort in Ballyan. That is a field ringfort on a limestone hill, oval and small, with an earthen bank still standing partly against the sky. The south edge has been cut back by a field boundary, but the west and north banks remain clear enough to walk around. Inside, the ground slopes downward and bare stone shows through the pasture in places. A person could have stood in that circle, looked out over the land, and known exactly where the edge of their world was.

In pasture, atop low limestone hillock. Oval area (28.5m N-S; 32m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.7m; ext. H 0.75m). Bank, best preserved WSW->NNW, is clipped by S field boundary SSE->SW. Interior, under pasture, slopes down towards centre, with exposed limestone bedrock visible in places. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
