Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballintober (bonny)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are human places misnamed because people stopped remembering how they worked. This is a real ringfort in Ballintober: a raised oval pasture edge, about forty-one metres long and thirty-one wide, with a shallow outer ditch and a buried entrance. The fairies are not the point. The forgotten people are. They shaped the earth, lived inside the circle, and disappeared from the story until the shape itself became mystical.
In low-lying pasture. A raised oval area (c. 41m N-S; c. 31m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 0.7m) with a shallow external fosse (Wth 2.5-3.8m; D 0.1-0.2m). The original entrance is not recognisable. It is overgrown with scrub. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 26 August 2011
