Fairy forts are not the castles of tiny people, but the homes of ordinary humans under a misleading name. In Balliniska a penannular earthen enclosure stood on a ridge, broad enough for a family, a herd, or a small congregation. It has since vanished under plough and forgetting. What remains is a hole in the landscape where a life once fit.

Monument, depicted as penannular embanked enclosure (diam. c. 50m) on 1924 OS 6-inch map, has been levelled. No trace of monument evident when inspected. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
