Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinaltig (orrery and Kilmore By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ballinaltig, County Cork: two concentric ditches and an inner bank form a 30m circular enclosure, still readable in aerial images beside another enclosure and old field boundaries. People may have lived, hidden or marked territory there before the ditches softened into grass and story. The fairies enter later, giving the forgotten shape a name that resists ownership.
Cropmark of two concentric fosses of circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) visible in aerial photograph (CASAP, July 1989); cropmark of internal bank visible in aerial photograph (GSIAP, R529, July 1975). Enclosure (CO024-208---) c. 100m to SE. Field system (CO024-235---) to S. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
