Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Airgloony, garracloon

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are earthen rings from the middle ages, not fairy homes. In Airgloony, garracloon, one such ring measured about thirty metres across before ploughing erased it. A second ring survives a hundred metres southwest. The first vanished into tillage, but its shape still turns in memory.
In tillage. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (D c. 30m). No visible surface trace survives. A similar monument (GA029-007----) lies c. 100m to SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
