Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Aghanashanamore

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

The monument was inspected in 1982 and described as follows: ‘Situated on the slope of a hill, with good views in all directions. Although it is clearly a ringfort and is visible from the road, this site is not indicated on any edition of the OS maps and does not appear to have been noted previously. It is a small but clearly defined ringfort. The remains consist of a circular enclosure (diam. 22m E-W) defined by a low bank (H c. 0.5m) which is quite worn in places. There are considerable amounts of small stone visible in the bank. There are no indications of an external ditch. The bank os lowest on the W side. Externally it is quite steep on E, because it is built against the slope of the hill. It is over 1m high from the outside at this point. There is some rock outcrop in the interior and a slight mound in the NW quadrant. This does not appear to be a house foundation and is probably a natural feature’ (SMR File 1982).
