Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Aghalust

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Aghalust in County Longford claims a vanished earthen ringfort. A 1976 survey measured its circular bank at twenty-one metres across, yet the whole structure vanished from ground level by 1998. The land swallowed the fort, erasing the boundary between human history and fairy speculation.
In level, low-lying pasture. A report in 1976 (SMR file) recorded a raised circular area (diam. c. 21m) enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone with a shallow external fosse. The original entrance was not recognisable. A short distance to the E of the centre of the interior was a wide, shallow depression of unknown significance. On re-inspection in 1998 the rath was not visible at ground level. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 23 November 2011
