Excavation

Located at the W edge of a fairly level landscape and at the crest of a steep slope down (H c. 12m) to the flood-plain of a S-N section of the River Boyne. Hanley (1999, 12-13) in excavation (99E0178) trenches (Wth 1.5m) around the entrance to the Man-made underground passage identified furrows (Wth 0.24-00.48m; D 0.12m: Wth 0.88-1.06m; D 0.3m) beneath the surface, but some ditches (Wth 0.65m; D 0.44m) were also present, running NE-SW. However, none could be regarded as a defensive feature that might have enclosed the Man-made underground passage. One excavation trench exposed the base of a field bank associated with modern ceramics.
