Enclosure in Treel (ardagh By., Corboy Ed)

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Enclosure in Treel (ardagh By., Corboy Ed) is a rectangular fort on a WSW-facing slope in County Longford, drawn as a subrectangular enclosure on the 1837 OS map. Its earth-and-stone bank still stands about a metre high, though field boundaries have eaten into its NE and SE sides. A sunken laneway at the base may mark a lost ditch, and the ruins of a 19th-century house cling to its southern face like a later shadow. The fort has outlived its makers, its purpose, and even its own shape.
On a WSW-facing slope in pasture. Depicted as a subrectangular enclosure with the designation ‘Fort' on the 1837 edition of the OS 6-inch map. A raised rectangular area (37.7m ENE–WSW; 36.3m NNW–SSE) enclosed by a substantial bank of earth and stone (Wth 5.2m; H 1.2m), which has been modified and incorporated into a field boundary along the NE and SE sides. There is no trace of a fosse but a sunken laneway at the external base of the bank, at the W end of the SW side and along the NW side, may incorporate the line of one. There are modern entrances at the N end of the NW and SE sides. Built against the outer face of the bank at SSW are the ruins of a 19th-century house and outbuildings. Compiled by: Patrick F.
