What is recorded here
Ardaghlooda is a rocky ridge above Lough Gur where three ancient enclosures still mark the grass. The main enclosure is a broad circular space about twenty-five metres across, standing among other old stone features on the hill. It is the kind of place where people may have gathered, kept animals or performed rituals long before modern fields covered the land.
On rocky pasture on the summit Ardaghlooda, a rocky ridge overlooking Lough Gur, 90m W of the lake. The site is one of three enclosures on the hill (LI032-011001-/002/004-) within a dense concentration of archaeological monuments including standing stones (LI032-009/010002-). Enclosure (LI032-011001-) located 95m to SSW. The great stone circle at Grange (LI032-004001-) located 430m to SW. The site pre-dates a later historic field system (LI032-011003-) which overlies the enclosures (LI032-011001/002/004-). The historic road (LI032-010001-) known as 'Cladh na Leac' skirts around the W side of the hill 165m W of the enclosure.
The site is not depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch or on the 1897 ed. 25-inch maps. Outline of enclosure (diam. c. 25m) visible on Google Earth orthophoto taken 25/03/2017. Faint outline of enclosure visible on OSi orthophoto taken 2005-12 and Digital Globe orthoimage taken 2011-13.
