What is recorded here
In rocky pasture on the summit of Ardaghlooda, a rocky ridge / hill overlooking and adjacent to Lough Gur which forms the E boundary of the site. The field system overlies three enclosures on the hill (LI032-011001/002/004-) and is located around a standing stone (LI032-010002-). A historic road (LI032-010001-) known as 'Cladh na Leac' forms the W boundary of the field system. The great stone circle at Grange (LI032-004001-) is located 220m W.
The field system is not depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map nor is it depicted on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map or on the Cassini OSi 6-inch map. It is visible on the OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 and on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. Identified as a relic field system by Ó Ríordáin (1951, 40 and 1954, 454) who describes the site as ‘field fences and enclosure’ and O’Kelly and O’Kelly (1981, 36) who notes a circular enclosure, several hut sites and system of ancient fields. The field system consists of 5 parallel field boundaries orientated E-W (ext. dims. 330m N-S; 265m E-W) spaced between 25-95m apart. There are also N-S walls linking the field boundaries. Field boundaries within the field system clearly overlie and cut through the earlier circular enclosures (LI032-011001-; LI032-011002- and LI032-011004-). The field system is tied into the E bank along the sunken roadway (LI032-010001-) suggesting they are contemporary. The field system is visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 16/03/2016; 25/03/2017 and 20/09/2020.
