Enclosure in Brigown

The WNW arc of a possible circular enclosure, defined by a fosse, was identified following archaeological testing in advance of development on the outskirts of Mitchelstown (Carroll 2006b, 41). Subsequent excavation revealed a large curving fosse (L. c. 34m; D 0.5-1.5m; Wth 2.3m) with a possible palisade trench located immediately E of and in line with the fosse along its S half. A large quantity of metal slag and charcoal were recovered from the fill at the N end of the fosse. Several small pits and linear features, located both inside and outside this section of the fosse, also contained slag and charcoal. No datable finds were recovered from the fosse.
