Enclosure in Ballycarroon

In pasture, in an area of undulating terrain. Not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map or on the 25-inch plan; depicted on the 1922 edition as a D-shaped hachured area bordered on the straight side to W by a field boundary. Included in the SMR (1991) and the RMP (1997) as ‘enclosure (site)’. A note in the SMR file records it as a destroyed enclosure. At this location there is as a D-shaped depression (14m NNW–SSE; 12m ENE–WSW; D 1.6m) with a concave inward-sloping scarp on the curving side, which falls to a relatively level base. On the straight side to W there is a steep external fall of ground, with remnants of a field fence on the top of this scarp. Ash trees grow in the interior, and gorse and brambles ring the perimeter. It appears to be a quarry pit of relatively recent date. No trace of an enclosure remains. There is a possible rath (MA038-014) c. 100m to NE.
