What is recorded here
Embanked enclosure is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Lismacool, County Roscommon, Ireland. It occupies a gentle south-facing slope where a sub-triangular earthwork once measured thirty-five metres north-south and thirty metres east-west. A north-south field bank later cut through its western edge, leaving only a twenty-metre grass-covered section bounded by a shallow scarp and outer ditch.
On a gentle S-facing slope. Depicted on the 1914 ed. of the 6-inch map as a sub-triangular area (dims c. 35m N-S; c. 30m E-W) with the apex at S and overlaid by a N-S field bank towards the perimeter at W. Only the portion W of this field bank now survives as a D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 20m N-S; c. 5m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 0.5-1m) and an outer fosse (Wth of base 4m; D 0.5m) SW-NW. It was in a similar condition in 1972 (Gannon 1972). Moated site (RO016-091----) is c. 110m to the SE.
