Edward J. Flanagan was born in Leabeg, County Roscommon, in 1886, the son of a herdsman who likely watched herds move across wet western fields before his son would move restless boys across an ocean. That ordinary Irish beginning makes his later work in Nebraska feel less like destiny and more like redirected energy: a young man shaped by distance, illness, family care and stubborn compassion. Flanagan went on to found Boys Town, and the connection between a small borderland birthplace and a city institution becomes striking.
