What is recorded here

The enclosing element is indicated as a scarp N-S on the 1913 OS 6-inch map but is not visible at ground level. According to O'Rorke (1878, 98), this is the site of a 'cashel' which surrounded a church (SL020-210001-) and graveyard (SL020-210003-) and it was used as a haggard in the early part of the 19th century. It was subsequently levelled and the stones from the enclosing wall were 'sunk underground' (ibid.). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008
