Knockmullin is an empty rise in a Sligo meadow where a MacDonagh castle stood until its stones were hammered into every house in Cartron. The castle vanished so completely that its bricks now build other people's walls, making the whole village a displaced fragment of the lost tower.

In a meadow, on top of a rise. There are now no visible remains of the MacDonagh castle which was demolished to provide stone for 'all the houses of Cartron, near Tubberscanavin', this stone 'having been tastefully hammered and chiselled' (O'Rorke [1889], vol. 2, 234-5). The castle was indicated on the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map as a small single tower. The castle at Knockmullin was built by the MacDonagh family and was demolished in the 19th century to provide stone for local houses in Cartron. It is remembered for its historical association with the MacDonagh clan and its contribution to the development of the surrounding area.
